July 17, 2025, Bamenda, Mezam State, Northern Ambazonia: Commercial bike riders across Ambazonia, especially in Bamenda, Bali, Batibo, Momo, Mamfe, and other towns in all 13 states of Ambazonia, are rising against daily extortion by the Cameroon occupation forces. On roads like the Bamenda–Bali highway, riders are being forced to pay 1,000 CFA francs twice each day at every colonial checkpoint. They say the control has changed, so we must pay again. A frustrated bike rider shared his experience.
On stretches as short as five kilometers for example, from Azire New Church to Akaka Junction multiple checkpoints have been installed where daily extortion takes place without legal justification. What should be a quick commute for bike riders has turned into an economic nightmare, as Cameroon occupation forces demand bribes morning and evening.
Systematic War Crimes Against Civilians
This daily extortion is not just corrupt; it constitutes a war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Cameroon, as an occupying power in Ambazonia, is legally prohibited from exploiting civilians under its control. Extorting money from bike riders and other civilians through threats and coercion is a serious violation of International Humanitarian Law.
Widespread Human Rights Violations
Across Ambazonia’s 13 states, the people face daily extortion that violates core human rights. These acts infringe on the right to work, freedom of movement, and protection from arbitrary interference. Under international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, civilians must be free from military abuse and illegal financial demands.
A Call For International Action
The daily extortion by Cameroon occupation forces across Ambazonia, from Mamfe to Momo, from Batibo to Bali, must be urgently addressed. Human rights organizations and international legal bodies must hold Cameroon accountable for this systematic abuse. Ambazonian civilians deserve protection, justice, and freedom from oppression.
